The State of Childcare in the United States

Author: Vigdis S. Aas Added Time:

The subject of child care had been a widely discussed one. Books, journals, newspaper columns, seminars a lot has been dedicated to this topic. In today's age, this subject of child care has taken all the more prominence. Far from being a mere question of how to bring up a well adjusted and 'cultured' child, child care has grown into a huge industry.

Changed that have taken place in the area of child care have been drastic over the last two generations. With the passage of time, a whole new way of looking at bringing up a child has been developed. As opposed to the tradition where the mother, or at times a governess or a nanny in case of children from wealthy homes, looked after the child, there has been a growing need these days for more and more professionals to enter this field.

In these times, rising costs and high lifestyles have made it mandatory for both parents to work, leaving child care in the hands of professionals. Child care has not only become big business but has also become institutionalized, with the mushrooming of nurseries for infants.

Finding the right kind of nursery is a major concern for parents. As much as they would like to hand over their responsibilities to others, they would also, at the same time, like to be sure that they are placing their kid in good hands.

The following enumerate some of the enquiries that parents must conduct before admitting the child into a nursery: Recognize which nurseries offer excellent care; Check if the staff is fully trained; What is the ratio of staff to children; Check for the kind of meals provided; Enquire about the hygiene levels;Find out what the method of child care is and whether there is a proper schedule for sleeping, feeding babies, etc
and finally,Enquire about the security

Information about good child care centers may be found with the local communities with which these centers often register. Or a still better option may be to ask for recommendations from parents whose kids are already admitted into some nursery.

Though it is true that the child is deprived of the care and warmth of parents bringing up their own kids, getting professionals to do the job is not all that bad an option. Growing up amidst a number of children from a variety of backgrounds, the child grows up to be more adaptable and receptive to other people's opinions. He learns to share and care as opposed to being self centered if he was brought up at home as his parent's only child.
