A Star Among Watches: Pulsar

Author: Vigdis S. Aas Added Time:

The first Pulsar watch was released into the market place in 1972 by the Hamilton Watch Company. The technology involved in this watch inspired a contemporary press report to describe the source of the watch name as "those strange distant spinning stars which send quick and regular radio bleeps from our space."

So what exactly is a Pulsar? Well, in a few words, a Pulsar is actually the core of a collapsed star, that can rotate as quickly as 1,000 times a second. With each rotation, a pulsar sends out an extremely regular pulse of radio waves. These waves can be detected here on Earth by radio telescopes. These pulses provide an unmatched standard of timekeeping accuracy.

In fact, this watch was the first of its kind: the digital display and the electronic quartz with a light emitting diode (LED) gave it a radically new space-age look. At that time, Pulsar watches were a huge hit and today those original watches are highly-prized collectors items. In time, the original boom diminished, but the Pulsar brand name had made its enduring impression worldwide.

After a few years, in 1979, following a series of changes in brand ownership, Pulsar watches were introduced to the U.S. market by SEIKO Corporation of America. This series, with new looks and new features, was the first full line of all-quartz mens' and ladies' wristwatches.

This move was a huge success, so in 1980, the Pulsar brand was launched in the UK, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain and other European markets. The brand grew rapidly, as it did in the U.S. and today, Pulsar is a major brand in all European countries, as well as in Australia, Canada, Africa and Israel.

More than twenty years after its first release, Pulsar carries further its heritage of technological excellence and outstanding design. Its latest creations are at the cutting edge of style and technology. Each and every Pulsar watch is built to the highest standards of quality. As a trademark of Seiko Corporation - the world's leading maker of quality timepieces, one can rely on Pulsar's products and on their after sales service? worldwide network.
